Meet The Flock – Toes

Leghorn Silkie Frizzle mix 4 month old chicken

Toes, along with his brothers Parrot and Heddie, joined our flock in February of this year as a tiny hatchling.

Ever since he was a baby, Toes’ unique look has been apparent- combining traits of his Leghorn mom and Frizzle Silkie dad. He’s white, with a Leghorn shape, but due to his Silkie genetics, Toes has blue earlobes, feathered legs, and an extra toe on each foot- giving him 10 toes total instead of the usual 8, which immediately inspired his name.

As he grew, Toes’ puffy little beard and cheeks started filling in, and he began to develop a crazy little mohawk on the top of his head. At first we thought that his mohawk would grow into a small crest, but it didn’t stop there- it kept growing until he had a glorious mullet, one that even Joe Dirt himself would admire! Toes’ comb has been growing equally as wildly, he’s currenlty just a few months old and it seems to get larger and develop new points every day.

An interesting combination of skittish and a cuddler, Toes will happily spend a good while napping on a lap, but will leap into the air with a high-pitched shriek and run around maniacally when startled. His crow is just as high pitched, second only to the squeak of the Seramas.

Meet The Flock – Bella

Bella, a plump light brahma chicken standing in leaves

Bella is everything that you’d picture a Brahma to be- plump, fluffy, and friendly.

She’s one of our OG Light Brahma flock, and along with Sniper, is one of the the first to come charging over whenever we come outside (for no reason other than to bring snacks, of course!) Bella is calm and quiet, happy either mingling with the others or off minding her own business, and easygoing- she never causes any trouble with others in the flock. She lays a large tan egg, decidedly pointed at the top, and her chicks always hatch out looking just like her- super round and feathery as soon as they pop out of the egg.

Meet The Flock – Dolores

Dolores is our Crested Cream Legbar, she sports a fantastic hairdo and a relatively large and forward facing comb, giving her the impression of having a perpetually questioning expression.

She’s on the smaller side, with an extra fluffy undercarriage and short legs, which causes her to always look like a bit of a low-rider. Her genes are strong ones though- Dolores’ babies always have her exact expression and small stature, even though they’re half Brahma.

Although Dolores is friendly, she’s a tad skittish and will happily eat from our hands until the crowd gets too rowdy, at which point she’ll skitter off to the side to wait for her private snack. She’s Troublemaker’s girl for sure, and won’t tolerate Little Pecker’s antics at all, giving him a thorough head pecking if he tries to get too fresh with her. Dolores adds a burst of color to our egg basket, laying medium-large eggs that are a dashing robin’s egg blue.

Meet The Flock – Lilly & Daisy

silver laced Wyandotte hen pecking the ground

Lilly and Daisy were the police of the flock when together, but after losing her sister, Lilly developed a new personality.

Lilly is a plump Silver Laced Wyandotte, whose round physique shows how much she loves to spend the day foraging for whatever bugs and other goodies she can find. She’s basically a golden retriever of chickens, and upon spotting us wander into the yard, will come running over to say hello and see if we have any snacks to share with her. Lilly gets along with everybody (except the guineas, she thinks they’re a bunch of idiots) but because of this, it took her a little while to work her way back up in the pecking order after losing her strong-willed twin sister Daisy.

Daisy was Lilly’s twin sister, an extremely friendly and social Silver Laced Wyandotte, with a voice that couldn’t be missed. Several times, we had contemplated changing her name to Roseanne. Her main mission was to teach the young roosters the right way to woo a lady, and if they decided to forego their little dance or get a little too fresh with one of the other girls, she’d rush right over to put them back in line. Unfortunately, Daisy was was a tad too adventurous one day, wandering off from the rest of the flock and the safety of cover, and fell victim to the talons of a hawk.

Meet The Flock – The Looneybins

guineafowl looking out

The five guineafowl in our flock are, more often that not, collectively known as “The Looneybins”.

It’s not that we can’t tell them apart- there are two pearl, three pied, a female of both, and they all have unique markings- it’s more being able to keep sane in their presence long enough to come up with five rational trains of thought to name them. If we had to, I guess that Nutcase, Looneytoon, Crazy, Bonkers, and Wackadoodle would probably work.

The Looneybins are very set in their routine, and each morning spend a half hour circling a stainless drum while honking and pecking at their reflections in the shiny sides. Once they tire of those antics, they’ll wander out front to perch on the split rail and voice their displeasure at cars that happen to drive by. The rest of the day will be spent wandering around looking for anything that is out of the ordinary, supervising any outside work that’s being done, and following the chickens around while squawking incessantly. Of course, if something odd were to happen during this time, such as a leaf falling, a bird or plane flying overhead, the sun slipping behind the clouds, or the cat sneaking out, they will immediately notify us of this unusual occurrence, and fly over the house or up into the trees.

Somehow, the Looneybins are smart enough to come back into the coop for food, and head inside each night for roosting, though they have zero concept of personal space, and in their younger days would roost on top of the chickens. Every so often though, they’ll lose track of time, suddenly realize that it’s too dark to find their way in (regardless of the spotlights lighting the way), end up roosting directly above the coop door and keeping everyone up all night with their cries. This domestication hasn’t affected their egg laying habits though- although they’ve grown up with chickens, and will follow their lead any other time, when it comes to egg laying they prefer to shun the nice, safe nest boxes in favor of creating a nice unsecure predator buffet in the woods. So, each night we collect their eggs for safekeeping, return them to the nest in the morning, and the Looneybins have been none the wiser.

Meet The Flock – Loretta

olive egger chicken hen profile

Loretta is our newest of the “big ladies”, joining us on October 4th 2022. She was named in tribute to Loretta Lynn who had unfortunately left this world that morning.

An Olive Egger, Loretta reliably provides a splash of color to our egg basket, her eggs ranging in shades of green from yellowish to silvery to khaki, sometimes speckled, and anywhere in between. She’s a close second to Barbara when it comes to prolific laying, and didn’t miss a beat all winter long.

Loretta is relatively social and friendly, but can be a bit aloof at times, and is the only one of the flock who has yet to eat from our hands. She’ll run over and happily peck at our feet or eat crumbs that fall from our hands, but no matter how much we try to coax her to take a delicious snack from our fingers, all she gives in return is an extended neck and suspicious side-eye.
